With the Government now scrapping the 'British Homes for British Workers' policy, and being unlikely to meet their target of 1.5m homes built within 5 years, it's important that we now find some middle ground on this matter, instead of throwing the baby out with the bath water.
I have always sympathised with refugees needing to find a home to start a new life, and I still do. Compassion is not an ideology, but a trait we should all hold. However, the social housing waiting list is only growing and growing, with many local families also fleeing their own nightmare and needing a fresh start. Many who I have seen first hand.
The Labour Government must now look to another way in which it can show to the British people that the welfare system and social housing, society's safety net, was built foremost for them. With the Government set to fast track 90,000 asylum applications, the pressure on social housing will only increase.
